Skills-for-self-reliance

When we think of the type of skills that we would need to provide our own everyday resources, they are diverse and varied and can be learnt by any member of the community for use within the community. Many of these skills could be described as traditional, some of which will already be alive and well within a particular community and just need to located and tapped into. So when we think about our everyday needs in relation to having the skills and knowledge to create and produce these resources a list of these skills and their applications soon begins to emerge of just what we need to know to enable us to create a sustainable independence from the industrial providers who control and own most of the worlds vital resources. The list of skills below are made up of some that are obvious and basic and other that could be useful for the transition towards a state of community self reliance. TraditionalSkills

Skills and attributes for a self reliant future

Gardening – the ability to grow our own resources

Cooking – to cook and process our community resources

Pickling and preserving – this adds value and longevity to the resources that we produce

woodworking skills – to make furniture and other utilitarian items that we use on a daily basis

electrical knowledge – for putting together low impact energy generating systems

craft skills – In any community there will be people who are familiar with craft skills, such as knitting,  embroidery, the ability to use a sowing machine, these people are community gold dust in terms of their knowledge of practical skills. knitting skills

friendly and approachable – we need to be open, friendly and approachable to people who are completely new to our ideas and might find the whole thing daunting.

spreading the knowledge – the passing on of new and old skills is vital for our transformation from consumers to producers

IT skills – useful for setting up an online community hub, also for training up those within the community
